What Does it Show?
Through statistical analysis of the litter distribution data collected by volunteers, we have recorded a statistically-significant correlation between litter concentration and proximity to areas where cars frequently stop. There is also a correlation between the distribution of roadside litter and drive-thrus without drive-by trash cans. This suggests that litter in Colchester is mainly attributed to drivers, many of whom may not even live in Colchester.
What Can We Do?
In the short term, installing drive-by trashcans at target drive-thrus and gas stations will encourage drivers to properly discard of their litter. However, plastic waste is the real issue. Encouraging local businesses to switch to biodegradable materials is a start, but the majority of our litter originates from the many chain businesses in Colchester, such as Dunkin and McDonald's. Lobbying at the national level is necessary to motivate change from such massive corporations, which is exactly why we have partnered with Earth Justice, to fund the legal battle in favor of our planet.
